Exhibition on ‘Biodiversity dependent rural livelihood’ held

BARCIK, on 21-23 May, 2012 arranged and facilitated a 3-day long exhibition on `Uncultivated Food, local rice varieties and rural food-biodiversity of Bangladesh’ at Drik gallery, Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The opening session took place on  on 21st May 2012 at 3 pm. at Drik gallery. Mr. Sujit Chowdhury, advisor on climate change from German Embassy-Dhaka; eminent naturalist and writer Dwijen Swarma; Mr. Mokaram Hossain, writer on nature and the editor of Tarupallab and the great farmers’ leaders from the different farmers’ organizations of Bangladesh attended in the inaugural session of the exhibition which took place on 21st May 2012.

In the exhibition which is considered as an exclusive and unique one to be ever exhibited in the country, about 250 species of plant herbarium and their living evident which grassroots people have been using as their food sources from a long time, some sample of local rice varieties, metaphor of 33 types of local rice varieties, 6 types of Jum rice varieties, seeds of some grains, agricultural materials, sample of plant killing pesticides, rural house building materials and some other almost extinct rural agro materials, handicrafts made of bamboo and other forest inputs and live-livelihood practices of the rural people were exhibited in the exhibition. Guests and participants appreciated the initiative of BARCIK to bring up front the life dependent natural resource of rural people and attract the attention of the state. BARCIK believes that this initiative could at least attract the attention of the state policymakers to consider natural resources and their importance for humans while they formulate food policy and programs.

Besides, folk culture and songs were also delivered to entertain and make the audiences and participants feel their roots in the exhibition. People from all stakes came and enjoyed the 3-day long exhibition. However, both print and electronic media covered the event daily and have published features and news based on the exhibition.
