Earth bank in times of crisis for Dalit women

Rukhsana Rumi from Netrakona
Development cannot be possible leaving anyone behind. We should move towards development with the inclusion of all professions, religions, races and communities. However, the socio-economic and social status of the Dalit families in Netrakona region is not good. Harijans, Rishis, Cobblers, Shabdakars, Ravidas, Basphors, Hijras, Blacksmiths, Kumars, Fishermen, Narasundars, Tailors, Washermen, Butchers, Doms-the Dalits live in Netrakona region. They live from hand to mouth leading them not to be able to save a penny. In the meantime, blacksmith families in Netrakona spend their days in destitution. Their industry is no longer able to keep up with the world this leads them to change their traditional occupation and migrate to towns for searching of livelihood.

On the other hand, 25 blacksmiths of Fachika village of Netrakona Sadar Upazila are no longer well. Many are leaving the profession and moving to other professions. These Dalit families have been working with BARCIK for the past few years. The male members were suffering from eye problems as they could not use glasses while working at home in the market.
However, BARCIK provides goggles to each member to prevent fire light and ash from coming into the eyes while working. As a result, everyone has benefited from using glasses. This year, women decided to save 10 taka per day from the sale of their own vegetables, chicken eggs and earnings. They bought earth bank from the market to save the money. According to them, this small clay bank is a big savings for them. This bank will be their partner in disaster. The initiative is taken to make themselves and their family comfortable and prosperous in near future.

Nonetheless, Dalits should be brought into the mainstream and they should be included in all development endeavors without discrimination. We believe only inclusive economics and politics can bring Dalits out of misery. Government and civil society should also take responsibility to eliminate social discrimination of Dalits. They should be given the opportunity to receive education as well.
