Inauguration of ‘Disaster Bank’ in Satkhira

Gazi Asad, Satkhira:

A ‘Disaster Bank’ has been inaugurated in Asashuni of Satkhira with the support of BARCIK through its Paribesh Project funded by Nezt Bangladesh. Yesterday (July 18) the UNO (Upazila Nirbahi Officer) Md. Yanur Rahman inaugurated the Disaster Bank.

During the inauguration Upazila Project Implementation Officer Sohag Khan, Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Rajibul Hasan, Environment Project District Coordinator Mahbur Rahman, Upazila Coordinator Asadul Islam, Advocacy Assistant Shiuli Mondal, Field Assistant Chanda Rani, Field Assistant Gopal Chandra Sarkar were present.

The initiator of Disaster Bank Salma Khatun of Adalatpur village said that earlier parents used to save money in this mud bank and used the cash during the troubling times. But the tradition of saving money through mud bank has disappeared in course of time. I have been able to start it again in the name of this disaster bank.

Minti Das of Asashuni Rishipara, said that it was used in almost every house in the name of Mati Ghot or Lakshmi Ghot. The money accumulated in this soil can be used for various purposes particularly during the disaster times. I am really very happy to have been able to restart using the mud made bank to save money for using during the disaster times which is now known as ‘Disaster Bank’.

It is to be mentioned that through the project titled ‘Strengthening the capacity of poor people affected by climate change (Poribesh), this disaster bank will be installed in the houses of 800 beneficiaries of Sadar, Sriula, Khazra and Pratapnagar Union of Asashuni Upazila. As Asashuni is a disaster-prone coastal upazila, this disaster bank will come in handy for the people of the region in the immediate danger of various disasters. The women of this region will make family savings in this eco-friendly soil bank.
