Let’s not hurt the trees

Amrit Sarkar from Rajshahi

‘All plants and trees have their own life and feelings. They also feel the pain when people hurt them, nail their body. Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose has proved that many years back. In spite of knowing that why we people hurt a tree by nailing her heart? The above words said by the chairman of Taland Union Nazimuddin Babu of Tanore upazila in Rajshahi.

The trees generally get pain in the place where the density of population is high. People use the body of trees to fix poster, billboard and advertisement using nails to set those business papers. The trees are wrapped in with those things covering the whole body of a big tree. However, most of the time, the ads are hung on the tree trunks with nails. The nails are easily fix in the body of trees without thinking about the pain and sufferings of these trees.

The members of a youth organization named ‘Swapna Ashar Alo’ of Mohar village of Tanore upazila in Rajshahi have recently realized that it is now time to aware people not to hurt the trees.

Recently at a monthly meeting, they decided to work to create public awareness about the issue and to remove all nails from those trees which have been nailed with those ads. The next day everyone went to Taland union and discussed the issue with the Union Parishod chairman. The chairman was happy to hear everything and assured all kinds of cooperation.

After cooperation from the local government is assured the youths discuss on how to start their work. BARCIK representatives participating in the discussion suggested them to produce some posters or placards placing the awareness such as ‘I am the tree, I have life’, ‘I also have a role to play in saving your life.’ ‘I beg you not to nail me down’ etc. Thus, they produced such small posters and placards and started campaigning on a certain day being accompanied by UP chairman, other members of local administration and BARCIK representatives. The youths hang the awareness message using GI instead of nails and recovered all the nails from the body of the nailed trees.

Alamgir Hossain, 32, president of Sapna Ashar Alo Youth Organization, said, ‘I want people to be aware and love the tree. The tree benefits us a lot.’ ‘I will make everyone aware through my silent protest. We will continue this activity’-he added.

The program started from Debipur Bazar and was held at the corner of Mohar village along the road, where people used to hang their awareness signboards by removing nails from the trees in crowded places. While the activity was going on in Mohar village.

It is to mention that there are people who love and want to protect the trees and nature. The number of these people is not small either. The members of ‘Mohar Swapna Ashar Alo’ have joined the in the list of that nature lovers.
