The Haor’s youths in environmental conservation

The youths of Haor area in Madan sub-district of Netrakona have been facilitating different activities and action to contribute in overall development of their respective area. These youths under Dhan Nadi Haor and Uchitpur Social Welfare organizations have been working with the people of Uchitpur, Gobindshree and Guchhgram for the last three years to protect the natural environment, making seed banks, planting palm tree seedlings and doing some other social and environmental awareness activities.

However, in order to enhance the beauty of Uchitpur area, protect the environment and deal with disasters these youths planted rare species of Krishnachaura, Shimul, Palash, Kanchan, Kathabadam, Jarul and Belly flower trees from Madan Abdul Aziz Khan Government College premises to Uchitpur Trawler Ghat. All these planted threes are now have grown up well and got matured. Besides, with the initiative of these youths every households of the area planted 10 local varieties of trees few years back and those trees are now providing them fruits and shadow.  In addition, 300 hijol (water resistant tree) trees were planted to make the protection dam firm and strong.

These youths also take initiative to create a green fence around the cluster village which was created by the government to rehabilitate the displaced communities few years back, by planting 500 hijols and karchs and 3000 murta cane saplings, binnachuba and dhulkalami etc. Moreover, they also planted saplings of neem, mango, blackberry, jackfruit and coconut trees, which have turned the village into a green village.

Besides, two young fellow of the haor area Mizanur Rahman and Dina Akhter have set up two nurseries in Kuliati and Uchitpur villages. They produce water tolerant seedlings and ensure these types of trees are available in the areas. In order to create greater awareness in the area these youths  set up 40 awareness signboards on trawler ghats, haors, river banks, markets and public gatherings where messages on conserving agrobiodiversity, environment and biodiversity are disseminated. They also planted 200 palm saplings to counter disaster and save lives and livelihood of the people in haor area.

Their work has been appreciated by the people of the region. BARCIK has been extending facilitating and technical supports to them so that they could accelerate their good works. The initiatives of the youths gives a lot of hope to the people of the area.
