Workshop on climate justice held in Manikganj

With the slogans ‘reduce carbon emissions to combat climate change’ a three-day workshop on climate justice and community empowerment was held at the Manikganj district sports organization auditorium on recently. The workshop was organized by BARCIK, a non-governmental development organization.

District President of Rivers and Wild Life Nature Protection Committee Advocate Deepak Kumar Ghosh, District President of Hiralal Sen Literary and Cultural Association Prof. Monowar Hossain, BARCIK’s directors Syed Ali Biswas and Touhidul Alam, Edward S. Zaman, BARCIK’s coordinator Zahangir Alam, Program Officer Rasheda Akhter, Md. Nazrul Islam etc participated in the workshop along with community people in the area BARCIK’s regional coordinator Bimal Roy presided over the workshop.

The discussants in the workshop while describing the negative impacts of climate change on human life said, Climate is changing rapidly and it bring vulnerability to us all. Now a days we experience the increased frequency of climate induced disasters.’ ‘Bangladesh is not much responsible for this rapid change of climate but one of the most effected countries in the world. Therefore, we should claim compensation from the rich countries who are most responsible for the climate change’-they added.

They went on saying, ‘thirty youths have done field level research on the effects of climate change and it would be good if they could document it well and have a dialogue with the disaster management committee. In this way, it is possible to strengthen the demand for climate compensation through national dialogue by bringing the real impacts of climate change on the life and livelihood of the rural communities.’
