A Green Coalition for protecting the Coast

Bablu Joardar from the coast

Climate change has posed extreme threats globally including Bangladesh. But despite this climate change related threats human beings have not restrained themselves from their nature-destroying activities. Nature and environment are being destroyed every day in the name of development! The new generation will suffer the terrible consequences of this nature-destruction. However, there is still a ray of hope that some nature-environment lovers, students, youths from villages and cities are coming forward to protect the nature-environment through their joint or own initiatives. They organize demonstration and create awareness among others for protection of environment and nature. Therefore, being a non-profitable environmental organization committed to protecting nature-environment and conservation of indigenous knowledge, BARCIK wishes to participate in these alliances and initiatives of these people to strengthen country wide journey towards protecting the nature and environment and establish ecological justice. BARCIK is engaged in creating ‘green coalition’ through uniting interested people, organizations and representatives from different professions (including farmers) and classes at villages and cities who are dedicated to and aware in protecting the environment, regionally and nationally. Therefore, BARCIK invites all eager and interested individuals and organizations to join in its journey towards nature-environment protection.

The members of civil society such as environmentalists, journalists, teachers. Social workers, youths and farmers and other occupational groups in Shymnagar of Satkhira district express solidarity with the Green Coalition initiative of BARCIK and are interested to join in this movement. They have recently formed a committee with the support from BARCIK to govern the journey of the green coalition in the coastal region. Through this committee the journey of green coalition will be fueled where the major focus will be protection of soil, land, rivers, the Sunderbans and other natural resources along with speeding the practice of agroecology for ensuring food sovereignty of all living beings.

The committee members said, ‘This movement aims at reforming the society and refreshing the values as well as increasing the awareness level of the community people to protect our planet. We will incorporate more aware and nature lover people in the journey to protect the Sundarbans and the coast from depletion. Therefore, we need to be united and initiate the real development of the coastal region’

It is to be mentioned that the protection of the natural environment, ecosystem and biodiversity and establishment of climate justice is an important issue in this changed situation. Today due to the limitless greed of human beings the other creations of the nature such as trees, vines and leaves, mountains, forests, rivers and reservoirs are all in danger. It is the human beings (particularly people or country from the perspective of money, wealth and power) who are responsible for this destruction/degradation of the nature. Due to this inhuman and irresponsible activities vulnerable situations have been observed which accelerate the rapid change of climate. Thus, the change in nature, season, and climate has impacted crop calendar of the farmers and socio-economic development of the country as well. Farmers are struggling to produce crops in this changed condition. The country has to face natural calamities like floods, river erosion, salinity, cyclone, tidal surge and waterlogging every year which cause loss and damage to human beings.
