Human chain and rally held in Satkhira demanding compensation for ‘loss and damage’

The coastal region of Bangladesh has been facing disasters one after another due to climate change. These disasters damage crops, uproot trees and kill many lives. However, in order to demand compensation for the loss and damage caused due climate change rally and human chain were held in Satkhira. Later a memorandum was submitted to the District Commissioner on the same demand.

This human chain was organized by the Education Culture and Diversity Protection Team of BARCIK at Shaheed Sam Alauddin Square, Satkhira New Market recently.

Convenor of Satkhira District Civic Committee Anisur Rahim, former president of Satkhira Press Club and civic leader Abul Kalam Azad, member secretary of Satkhira Journalist Union Sharifullah Qaiser Sumon, civic leader Ali Noor Khan Babul, labor leader Rabiul Islam, BARCIK’s official Gazi Mahida Mizan, Habibul Hasan, Tariqul Islam Antar and other organizers of culture and diversity protection team spoke in the event demanding such compensation for the victims.

Speakers said, ‘Natural disasters are frequently hitting the coastal areas due to climate change and the temperature has risen day by day. Coastal people are being forced to leave the area due to cyclones and high tides as well as increasing salinity. They have to migrate to towns and cities in search of livelihoods. Due to this, the number of slum dwellers in the city is increasing.’ ‘Even after leaving the coast and moving to the cities, they are facing many problems including food shortage, lack of shelter, unemployment, health risks and their way of life is getting disrupted’-they added.

The speakers made some demands which follow: Construction of sustainable embankments for the safety of coastal areas, solving the scarcity of fresh water, creation of green funds for the city, ensuring safe, sustainable consumption and production in the city, and urgent action to deal with climate change and its effects etc.

Earlier, a rally was taken out from Shaheed Abdur Razzak Park in Satkhira. The rally went around various roads and ended at Shaheed Sam Alauddin Square in New Market.
