Healthy soil saves everyone’s life

`Soil is our mother, protecting the health of the soil is our responsibility. If the soil is healthy, everyone’s life will be saved, everyone will be well. Therefore, it is the responsibility of us all to take initiative to keep the soil healthy and sound. We can keep the soil healthy by using organic fertilizers abandoning the chemicals. If the soil is healthy we can produce food crops and can feed humankind. Healthy soil increase biodiversity as many wild plants can grow without nurturing them. The nature thus remain fresh and strong.’

The above statement belonged to the speakers in the discussion meeting held on the occasion of World Soil Day arranged by BARCIK in Horirampur sub-district of Manikgonj. The dicussuon was presided over by woman fafrmer Runa Akhter of Daskandi village of Harirampur. However, farmers and women farmers named Najma Begum, students of Patgram Anartha Bandhu Government High School, Abdus Chalam, youths and BARCIK officials participated in the discussion meeting.

In the discussion, the speaker also said, ‘We are village people. Soil is means everything to us. We use the soil every day to produce crops and save life. We cannot think of anything without soil. If we sow seeds in the soil, we get food without having to do it again.’ They went on saying, ‘We should take environmentally friendly initiatives to produce food and crops which keeps the soil healthy. But in the hope of more production, we use too much fertilizer which kills the productivity and fertility of the soil.’ They said, “We all need to think about the health of the soil. If we want to keep the soil healthy we should practice organic agriculture. If our soil, water and air work well, we can all live well. The nature also will be fresh.’

In the discussion, information was shared and the types of work done by farmers and cultivators with the soil were highlighted. He showed his initiative to protect the health of the soil. Sharing information on organic farming practices will help in expanding eco-friendly initiatives.
